FAQs

What is Myofunctional Therapy?

The American Speech-Language Hearing Association defines Orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) as: patterns involving oral and orofacial musculature that interfere with normal growth, development, or function of orofacial structures, or call attention to themselves (Mason, n.d.A). OMDs can be found in children, adolescents, and adults. OMDs can co-occur with a variety of speech and swallowing disorders. OMD may reflect the interplay of learned behaviors, physical/structural variables, genetic and environmental factors (Maspero, Prevedello, Giannini, Galbiati, & Farronato, 2014).

Myofunctional Therapy is a specialty branch of medicine that assesses OMDs and treats or refers out for all areas of function. These include Respiration, Oral Habits, Sleep Habits, Dental History, Oral Structure and Function, Chewing and Swallowing / Feeding Skills. Registered Dental Hygienists and Speech-Language Pathologists currently play a large role in treatment of OMDs. Collaboration with other medical specialists is of utmost importance in the success of treatment of OMDs. Your medical team could include specialists such as: Allergist, Certified Orofacial Myologist, Speech-Language Pathologist, Dentist, Oral Surgeon, Orthodontist, Otolaryngologist, Physician, Physical Therapist, and Sleep Apnea Specialist.

Why was I referred to Flight Speech Therapy?

Your dental/medical provider has identified one or more myofunctional disorders and would like for Flight Speech Therapy to assess and treat the underlying causes. These could range from TMJ pain, sleep disordered breathing, vocal fatigue, chronic head/neck pain, tongue tie, orthodontic relapse, chewing and swallowing disorders, among others.

What information will I learn from this evaluation?

Evaluations at Flight Speech Therapy are comprehensive and assess oral resting posture, oral anatomy, respiration/airway, sleep patterns, medical history, allergies/reflux/digestion, non-nutritive habits, chewing and swallowing patterns, picky eating/food preferences, sensory issues/dysfunction, and articulation/speech habits. Myofunctional therapy is most successful when paired with certain other health providers, and we also provide outside referral recommendations for comprehensive care.

How long will I wait in the waiting room, and how long can I expect the evaluation to take?

Our evaluations start and end right on time. Please arrive a few minutes early to check in at the front desk. You can expect the evaluation to last about 1 hour.

What if I cannot attend my scheduled appointment?

We accept cancellations 3 or more hours prior to your appointment. Otherwise, you might be subject to a $100 no-show fee. You can send us an email, text, or phone call to cancel and reschedule your evaluation appointment.

Can my evaluation be completed virtually?

Evaluations must be completed in-person, as the therapist must be able to physically assess muscle tension and strength.  However, weekly or bi-weekly virtual options are available for therapy appointments within the state of Arkansas. Your therapist will decide if teletherapy is a good option for your specific, individualized treatment plan. If you are receiving teletherapy, it is recommended that you plan to come in for an in-person session once a month.

Do I need to bring anything for this evaluation?

Bring a crunchy snack, a chewy snack, something to bite off (like a granola or breakfast bar), favorite water bottle/cup. Please bring any mouthguards, dental appliances, retainers that you use during the day or night.

What will I need to do after the evaluation?

Visit our friendly office staff at the front desk to check out and schedule your first therapy or teletherapy appointment with your therapist to figure out which mode of service works best for you. Your therapist will specify how often you need to schedule therapy appointments based on results of the evaluation. Myofunctional therapy depends on consistent attendance and compliance with a home program to experience the most success towards treatment goals.
